Wear starts long before the stride shortens

Cartilage carries a horse’s own weight all day and a rider’s on top of it, and it has no blood supply of its own — so it repairs slowly, and the synovial fluid that cushions it thins as the work adds up†. Long Run carries glucosamine, green-lipped mussel, MSM and hyaluronic acid, the actives with the most evidence behind them for joint comfort and everyday recovery.

Start before the stride shortens. The window that matters most is the one before you feel anything at all.

Our 3 Pillars of Staying Sound

One chew, three jobs: cushion the joint, calm the wear that work leaves behind, and give the tissue what it needs to rebuild between sessions.

1. Cushion

Cartilage is mostly water held inside a scaffold, and that scaffold is built from glucosamine and chondroitin. Both fall away as a horse ages and as the miles add up. Supplying them alongside hyaluronic acid — the molecule that makes synovial fluid thick enough to cushion — is the part of the formula aimed squarely at how the joint carries load.

2. Calm

Work leaves heat and soreness behind, and a horse that is sore moves badly, which is how a small thing becomes a stride problem. MSM, boswellia and turmeric are the three actives here with the longest history behind them for everyday comfort after work, and they are the ones a rider tends to notice first.

3. Rebuild

Repair happens between sessions, not during them. The omega-3s in flaxseed feed the tissue that has to rebuild, and vitamin E is in the bag to protect those oils — on the shelf and in the horse that eats them. Coat and condition are the visible end of exactly the same job.

The Evidence

Glucosamine, chondroitin and hyaluronic acid are among the most studied joint actives in both equine and human medicine. Our own field work is in planning — we will publish it here when there is something real to show.

Crafted With Love, Backed By Science
Glucosamine HCl

Every active is here because the evidence earned it a place — chosen for what they do together for joint comfort, recovery and everyday condition.

  • Shrimp and crab shells, the natural source of glucosamine
  • Green-lipped mussels, a whole-food source of chondroitin
  • A dish of clear gel, illustrating hyaluronic acid
  • Green vegetables, natural sources of the sulfur in MSM
  • Golden frankincense resin, the source of our boswellia extract
  • Sunflower seeds and almonds, natural sources of vitamin E
  • Fresh turmeric root and ground turmeric
  • Golden-brown flaxseeds, the source of our omega-3 ALA

Glucosamine HCl

1. Cushion

Glucosamine is the building block of the glycosaminoglycans that hold water inside cartilage and let it take load without flattening. A horse makes its own and makes less of it as the years and the miles add up. Ours is the HCl salt, which carries more glucosamine per gram than the sulfate does.

Green-lipped mussel is the whole-food route to chondroitin, and it brings its own marine omega-3s along with it. It is among the better-studied single ingredients in equine joint work, which is why it is here as well as the isolated actives rather than instead of them. Ours is cold-processed so those fats survive the drying.

Hyaluronic acid is what makes synovial fluid thick enough to do its job — the difference between a joint that glides and one that grinds. Concentration falls with age and with hard work. Ours is a low-molecular-weight form, which is the one with the most evidence behind it for being absorbed when it is fed rather than injected.

Methylsulfonylmethane is a natural source of sulfur, the mineral connective tissue is built with. It occurs in green vegetables in quantities far too small to matter at a functional dose, which is why it is here in measured form. It is the most widely fed comfort active in equine supplements and the one owners most often notice after hard work.

Boswellia serrata resin has been used for joint comfort for about as long as anyone has been writing things down, and the boswellic acids in it are the reason why. It sits on the calm side of the formula alongside turmeric, and the two are usually fed together because they work on different parts of the same everyday wear.

Vitamin E is the formula’s own bodyguard. The omega-3 oils that do the rebuilding are themselves easy to oxidise, and d-alpha tocopherol is the fat-soluble antioxidant that keeps them intact — in the bag on the shelf and in the horse that eats them. A stabled horse off grass is the one that needs it most.

Curcumin, the yellow pigment in turmeric root, is one of the most examined plant compounds in the comfort literature. On its own it is poorly absorbed, which is why ours is carried alongside the fats in the chew rather than fed dry — the oil is what gets it past the gut wall.

Flaxseed is the horse’s natural omega-3. Grass is where they would normally get it, and a stabled horse on hay gets almost none. The ALA in it feeds the tissue that has to rebuild between sessions, and it is the ingredient behind the coat change owners tend to spot before anything else.

Science vs Myth

1

Joint supplements are only for old horses

The Truth: Cartilage wear is cumulative and it starts with the first season of real work, long before a rider feels anything through the reins. Feeding a horse that is still in its prime is the point — you are supporting the years ahead, not trying to claw back the ones behind.

2

Supplements aren't as effective as prescription medications

The Truth: They do different jobs. Long Run is a daily structure-function supplement, not a medicine, and it is not a substitute for veterinary care. It is built to sit alongside whatever your vet recommends — tell them what your horse is on, and check the rules before you compete.

3

A supplement replaces good farriery and correct work

The Truth: Nothing in a bag beats balanced feet, a saddle that fits and a sensible programme. The chews are the part of the routine you cannot do with a rasp — everything else still matters just as much.

4

Oral joint actives never get absorbed anyway

The Truth: That was the fair criticism of the first generation of these products, and it is exactly why the forms matter here: glucosamine HCl rather than sulfate, low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid, and curcumin carried in fat. Most of the work is still in people and in lab models, which is why we describe what the actives support rather than promising an outcome.
